Service Description: Ocean currents are continuous and directed movements of ocean water generated by wind, temperature, salinity differences, and other forces. Currents affect climate, ecosystems, the distribution of marine organisms, and can contribute to changes in nutrient, temperature, and salinity in the water column. Knowledge of current speed, direction, and variations at depth can aid in identifying compatible areas where ocean infrastructure can be installed and maintained.
Current speed (m/s) and direction (u and v vectors) data were derived from the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) + Navy Coupled Ocean Data Assimilation (NCODA) Global 1/12° Reanalysis, experiments and processed at 14 depth levels, using daily data files to create monthly climatological averages across a 20-year period from 1992 to 2012. U and V vectors were derived from the HYCOM. Current Magnitude or Speed (m/s) was calculated from the U and the V vectors. U is the velocity toward east and V is the velocity toward north.
