The Hazards U.S. Multi-Hazard (HAZUS-MH) is a nationally applicable standardized method that estimates potential losses from earthquakes, hurricane winds, and floods. HAZUS-MH uses state-of-the-art geographic information system (GIS) software to map and display hazard data and estimates of damage and economic loss to buildings and infrastructure.


  • Estimates physical damage to residential and commercial buildings, schools, critical facilities, and infrastructure
  • Calculates economic loss, including lost jobs, business interruptions, and repair and reconstruction costs
  • Determines social impacts, including estimates of shelter requirements, displaced households, and population exposed to scenario floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes
