Marketing Storm Surge for Improved Risk Communication

Storm surge, and the potential threat to life and property that it carries, is often misunderstood by the public. To raise awareness of storm surge hazards and encourage public safety, the National Hurricane Center used social science research to inform the creation of the Potential Storm Surge Flooding map. The storm surge marketing plan will guide outreach efforts to communicate the availability of the new map to its audiences, ensure correct understanding and interpretation of the map, and strive for consistent messaging about the map among National Weather Service partners.
