Introduction

In this activity, students research animals that live in mangroves and salt marshes. Students complete flash cards about the animals and think about how they are adapted to live in these two estuarine habitats. They then study changes in the mangrove habitat at Harbor Island, located in the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve, between 1930 and 2004. Using historical habitat maps and long-term data sets, students will make correlations between air temperature and habitat composition.

This activity has two parts:

  1. What Lives in Mangrove and Salt Marsh Habitats?
  2. Mapping Mangroves
