Aquarium Tool Uses Sea Level Rise Viewer

The Takeaway: Visitors see how, where, and under what conditions flooding is likely to occur.

South Carolina Aquarium visitors can get an instant picture that shows whether, or how, coastal flooding is likely to impact their homes, workplaces, and neighborhoods, courtesy of a tool that uses data and maps from NOAA’s Sea Level Rise Viewer. Built by ROK Technologies for the aquarium, SeaRise promotes public safety and engagement to deal with the rising threat.

The mobile-friendly tool also approximates the number of homes, people, and businesses likely to be affected by various sea level rise scenarios.

As Charleston’s most visited attraction, the South Carolina Aquarium welcomes tens of thousands each year, providing many opportunities to highlight this public safety issue. SeaRise also engages countless others through aquarium partnerships, donors, and word of mouth. (2017)
