Driving Conservation along the Coast
The Edisto Island Preservation Alliance is dedicated to preserving the island’s historical, cultural, and natural heritage and promoting growth and prosperity. The alliance developed a management plan that included a variety of strategies to accomplish this mission, including influencing the county comprehensive plan, establishing a National Scenic Byway, and conserving 50 percent of the island’s land.
The group was successful in its efforts. A NOAA tool (Habitat Priority Planner) and a NOAA-led participatory mapping process was used to visualize the target conservation areas and gain community buy-in. Participatory mapping is a means whereby community members are involved in determining what community attributes should be protected. (2016)
