Challenge

An accumulation of sediment from past construction projects rendered a public pier and boat launch in Maine virtually unusable. The town needed to know the economic impact of this issue in order to justify the cost of fixing it.

Solution

Using NOAA’s Economics: National Ocean Watch (ENOW) data from the Digital Coast, the town conducted an analysis on the socioeconomic impact this closure had on the community and its marine industries. The study concluded that multiple economic sectors were greatly affected by the closure of this pier, which gave the town the information necessary to make a decision on how to proceed in the most cost-effective way.
