Overview
Coastal communities increasingly realize the need for adaptation planning, but many are unsure where to begin. This interactive course is designed for coastal management practitioners who are just starting to address the challenges resulting from climate change. Participants will learn the foundational concepts of a five-step adaptation-planning process.
The entire course is conducted online. It includes a combination of self-guided learning and interactive, instructor-led sessions with group activities. No experience in adaptation planning is needed.

- Consider information sources to better understand local changing conditions
- Describe aspects of vulnerability and approaches to scoping a vulnerability assessment
- Identify and select different types of adaptation options
- Discuss a pathway for taking action

Participant Requirements
As a participant, you will be expected to:
- Use the following technologies to engage with trainers and fellow participants
- Internet connection
- Webcam
- Headset, or speakers and a microphone
- Adobe Connect and the learning management system Moodle, both furnished by NOAA
- Complete on-your-own parts of the training
- Spend up to 60 minutes viewing videos, completing short assignments, and engaging with course participants online prior to the first live session
- Spend up to 60 minutes after the first live session completing assignments and preparing for the second live session
- Join live, interactive online training sessions
- Participate in two 2.5-hour interactive sessions on two separate days
Continuing Education Credits
This course offers six hours of continuing education credits for the American Institute of Certified Planners.
